Manitoba car insurance, explained

When you buy car insurance in Manitoba, you will be purchasing basic mandatory coverage which is provided by Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI), sold through Westland Insurance either by email, phone or in person at any of our Manitoba locations.

All drivers in Manitoba must have a basic policy from MPI to drive. This includes coverage for Personal Injury, All-perils insurance, and Third-Party Liability.

You can choose to up your basic protection with optional car insurance in Manitoba, like increased liability or reduced deductibles.

This covers your car and any equipment that’s permanently attached against accidental loss or damage in Canada or the U.S. This includes damage from collision, upset (like if your vehicle tips or rolls over), or other instances like vandalism, theft, hail, and fire.

Basic Autopac insurance also includes some protection against loss of use if your car is stolen or accidentally damaged.

Standard Third-Party Liability includes protection if you’re held legally responsible for damage or injuries to others, even if you weren’t driving at the time.

You’ll be covered if your car injures a person, or damages a vehicle or property outside Manitoba but within Canada and the U.S.

Coverage through the Autopac Personal Injurity Protection Plan (PIPP) extends to all Manitoba residents that are injured in a car accident anywhere in Canada or the U.S. This coverage also extends to visitors in Manitoba who are injured in an accident. For Manitobans, there’s no reduction in the level of this benefits even if you’re partially or fully at-fault for the incident.

This protects incomes beyond $115,000 up to a limit of your choice, if your income is lost due to a debilitating injury. This is an add-on to the income replacement residents are eligible for through the Personal Injury Protection Plan (PIPP).

Caters to Manitoba residents with collector vehicles. The Collector Vehicle Program (CVP) offer year-round insurance that reflects the infrequent use of collector cars, and the advanced care and maintenance they require. The program offers Basic all-perils insurance protection throughout the year, with the convenience of not having to switch to Lay-Up or another insurance product in the winter months.

Under basic Autopac insurance , the maximum insured value for a vehicle is $70,000. Residents with vehicles valued over this maximum insured value may consider adding Excess Value coverage to their policy to ensure they’re adequately reimbursed for their car, should they be involved in an insured loss.

Basic Autopac insurance includes some coverage for loss of use under All Perils coverage. Drivers can enhance their Loss of Use coverage for the option to rent a vehicle comparable to their current one, with coverage for up to $56/day, up to a maximum of $1,500.

Basic Third-Party Liability insures drivers for up to $500,000 for claims made against you. With increased coverage you can up your coverage to a maximum of $10 million. Increased liability coverage is strongly recommended for those planning to drive outside the province.

Ideal for those planning to park their vehicle for an extended period of time, Lay-Up coverage allows drivers to keep their registration and road coverage. It covers accidental loss or damage like fire, theft, vandalism, hail, and lightning, excluding usage on the road.

Basic Autopac insurance will cover the cost of your car’s actual cash value if it’s written off – meaning its value after depreciation. If you bought a new car, you could be left with a loan for more than that value or will need to spend more to replace your original vehicle. With New Vehicle protection, you’ll be covered for the full purchase price of your car including an allowance for inflation – meaning you’ll be fully covered for a new car.

The coverage for leased vehicles is similar. Since leased cars are owned by a dealership or leasing company, any reimbursement will go to them leaving you without financial compensation if your car’s written off. By adding this optional coverage to your policy, your downpayment or trade-in allowance will be covered.

The basic deductible for private vehicles is $750. With this optional car insurance in Manitoba, you can lower your deductible to $500, $300, or even $200 for lower out-of-pocket expenses should you need to make a claim.

Get affordable coverage for vehicles you may rent across Canada or the U.S.

Example of a car insurance claim

You are on your way with your kids to a hockey tournament and you stop at a drive-thru to pick up breakfast. You drop your wallet and when reaching for it, hit the accelerator and your vehicle crashes into the building damaging your car and the commercial building. What now?

Parts of your car insurance policy will spring into action to help.

  • Collision Deductible
The collision is your fault, and you will be responsible to pay your policy deductible. Fortunately, you purchased a lower deductible option and instead of the basic $750 deductible you will only have to pay $200 to the autobody shop when the repairs are completed.
  • Loss of Use
The vehicle sustained significant damages and is undriveable. You rely on your vehicle and purchase the Loss of Use coverage allowing you to rent a vehicle. The car rental agency near you has a comparable vehicle available and you are back on the road the same day.
  • Third-Party Liability
You will be responsible for the property damage to the commercial building. Your Third-Party liability insures you against claims others make against you.
